Full name of organisation | Catholic Women’s League |
Short description | The Catholic Women’s League (CWL) in Australia originated from various Catholic women’s associations in different states. It started in New South Wales in 1913 as the Catholic Women’s Association, shifting from social activities to charitable work. South Australia followed in 1914, inspired by similar leagues in England, focusing on religious, intellectual, and social unity. In 1916, Victoria and Wagga Wagga founded the Catholic Women’s Social Guild, emphasizing prayer and action. Queensland’s CWL was established in 1927, modeled after the Catholic Daughters of America. These state leagues united nationally to form the Catholic Women’s League Australia in 1975. |
