Full name of organisationChristian Aboriginal Parent-Directed School
Short name / acronymCAPS
Short descriptionEstablished in 1981 in Coolgardie, CAPS was initiated by a group of Aboriginal people and parents, many of whom had been raised on the Mount Margaret Mission in the Goldfields. Motivated by their positive educational experiences and a commitment to high academic standards, the founders aimed to create an environment fostering both spiritual and educational growth for their students. At the time, Aboriginal students were not permitted to study beyond Year Ten. Today, many CAPS students pursue tertiary education, with all encouraged to develop their individual talents and strengths.

CAPS Coolgardie is a Christ-centered learning community dedicated to nurturing spiritual growth and developing the academic and athletic abilities of each student. The school was established due to the dissatisfaction of local Aboriginal people with the existing education systems, which they felt inadequately served their children. They noted poor standards and a lack of confidence from teachers in the abilities of Aboriginal students. Under the leadership of Mr. John Tyndall, CAPS emphasized Christian education, remediation programs, personalized student development, success in numeracy and literacy, and the fostering of social conscience, personal respect, and leadership skills. The school has always been inclusive, enrolling non-Aboriginal children, particularly in its primary section.
