Short descriptionThe NAC was established in 1973 by the Australian Government, Whitlam Government, to represent Indigenous Australians and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Their principal function was to advise the Department of Aboriginal Affairs and the Minister on issues plaguing First Nations People. The members were elected by Indigenous people. The relationship between the Conference and the Federal Government deteriorated progressively and was eventually abolished by the Hawke government in 1985.
