| Short description | Founded in 1929, the Women’s Pioneer Society of Australasia is comprised of female descendants of early colonial pioneers, including convicts, military personnel, and government officials. The idea for the society emerged from a meeting in the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney, where five pioneer family descendants, led by Miss Carlotta Doyle, recognized the importance of preserving their heritage. Rita Lingham, a descendant of Lt. George Johnston, became the first president, and Miss Carlotta Doyle served as the inaugural honorary secretary. Despite the challenges of the Great Depression, the society quickly grew to 350 members, initially gathering at the Country Women’s Association before securing their own space at Burdekin House, Macquarie Street, Sydney. |
