OVERVIEW | |
Full name of organisation | National Council of Women |
Short name / acronym | NCWA |
Short description | Between 1896 and 1911, National Councils of Women were established in each Australian state. Initially, these councils were separately affiliated with the International Council of Women (ICW). In 1931, they united to form the National Council of Women of Australia (NCWA) after extensive negotiations and conferences. NCWA reflects the development of mainstream feminism in Australia and the pursuit of gender equality. Over 125 years, its members have significantly impacted Australian society, advocating for equity and security in various aspects of life. Since its formation in 1931, NCWA has had 23 presidents, with notable contributions from early leaders like Emily Dobson, Lillias Skene, and Mildred Muscio. This exhibition honors these 26 women for their leadership in Australia’s feminist history. |
